How pool contractors find new clients in Indianapolis

By Noah Oetjen · October 14, 2026

The most reliable local signal is the pool permit. Nearly every in-ground pool in the Indianapolis metro is permitted, and each permit names the address, the town, the installer and the declared job value. In September 2026 the metro filed 84 pool permits with a median declared value of $100,000 — and 67 of them were outside the City of Indianapolis.

September 2026 Pool report as delivered: 84 permits in 14 towns. Towns with fewer than five pool permits are not listed.

Carmel, Zionsville, Westfield, Noblesville and Fishers together filed more pool permits (44) than Indianapolis and every other town combined. If your crews are based on the south side, that is a long drive — and a reason to know where the work is before you buy ads.

Every month since March has carried at least 80 pool permits. People sign in the fall for a spring dig, and the permit often comes first.

Who is installing them

48 different installers were named on September’s pool permits, and 39 of them were named on exactly one. About four in five installers pulled one permit that month. The most permits went to Pools of Fun (6), Family Leisure (5) and Pools by Cory (5). Nobody owns this market, which is good news if you are trying to grow in it.

How each kind of pool business uses the permit record

Pool installers

A permit means someone already sold that pool, so it is not a lead for the same job. It is a map: which towns are buying, which neighborhoods just got their first pool (the neighbors noticed), and which competitors are winning where. Put your yard signs, mailers and canvassing where the permits are, not where you guess they are.

Pool service and maintenance companies

Every new pool needs opening, closing and weekly service, and the owner has not picked a company yet. The permit is the first public moment that pool exists — months before it shows up anywhere else.

Fence, hardscape, landscape and electrical

A pool permit means the backyard is torn up and the budget is already approved. Fencing, patios, lighting and landscaping usually follow the dig.

Looking one step ahead

High-value new homes are next year’s pool buyers. In September the median declared value of a new home in Zionsville was $1,184,399, against $387,000 across the metro. The Zionsville new-construction page shows who is building them.

Permits versus shared leads

A shared lead is a homeowner who filled out a form, sold to more than one contractor at once — you are racing other companies to the phone. A permit is a different thing: a public record that a job is happening, with an address and a dollar figure, available to anyone willing to collect it. Shared leads are for winning the next quote. Permits are for knowing your market and reaching the jobs around the pool. Most pool companies that grow use both.

Questions people ask

Most use some mix of referrals, yard signs, paid ads and lead services. The local signal that gets missed is the pool permit: it shows which towns and neighborhoods are buying pools right now. How many pool permits are filed in the Indianapolis area each month?
Between March and September 2026, every month carried at least 80: 81, 99, 85, 96, 108, 85 and 84. September’s 84 permits had a median declared value of $100,000.
Which Indianapolis-area towns build the most pools?
In September 2026: Indianapolis 17, Carmel 13, Zionsville 11, Westfield 9, Greenwood 7, Noblesville 6 and Fishers 5. Hamilton and Boone county towns together outpaced the city.
Is permit data better than shared leads for a pool company?
They do different jobs. A shared lead is a homeowner asking for quotes from several companies at once; a permit is a public record that a pool is being built, with the address and value. Permits are better for finding where the market is and for the trades that follow a pool; shared leads are for the next quote.
